Michelene Chi is a cognitive science researcher interested in issues of how students learn complex concepts introduced in students' science texts. One line of her studies examines ways of improving students' learning. This has included demonstrating how students can learn better by self-explaining, understanding why tutoring is an effective instructional method from the students' perspective, and more recently, she has developed a new method of effective learning, by having pairs of students observe and overhear instructional dialogues collaboratively with a peer. A second line of work tries to explain why students have robust misconceptions and she has explored ways to overcome such misconceptions, especially for science concepts of processes. She received her PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University.
